Suojelen luontoa! I protect the nature!

Siinä samalla katoaa aito avara suomalainen peltomaisema monesta paikasta.

Tähän tunneryöppyyn on selityksensä.

It’s all well and good to be a conservationist. But hold on a moment – what does it mean? It sounds good at first blush but what about me? Am I a part of nature or some outside factor? If nature conservation translates to humans protecting nature from humans, then we are certainly not a part of the nature. We have taken over it.
It is true of course that there are a lot of evil things we have done to the nature by living like pigs. Without any worry for the consequences, without cleaning up after ourselves. It’s a shame.
But on the other hand, the nature has an amazing ability to heal. If you clear out a bush, it doesn’t take long for it to grow back, doubling its original size. If you don’t restrain the nature, it will come to your territory. Some abandoned houses can hardly be seen from all the growth around them.
And then there are us wise Finnish people who help the nature by planting fields full of trees. Let’s plant a proper forest into the good, fertile soil earlier generations put a lot of effort in to clear. In the meantime, the genuine, vast fields Finland is known for will disappear.
There is a reason for all this emotion. I just spotted a childless couple of swans on the lake. A little before midsummer the family included two little babies, whom the parents lovingly nurtured. First one disappeared, then the other. The distress of the swan mother was heartbreaking. This wasn’t due to a beast man, but in all likelihood something that shouldn’t be in nature in the first place – a mink. Why is there a mink freely wreaking havoc on nature – now, that’s another story.

Terveyskengät? Health shoes?

Ihmiskunta on jo vuosisatoja suojannut jalkansa kengillä. Suutareilla on riittänyt töitä kenkien tekemisessä. Materiaalina käytettiin aiemmin enimmäkseen nahkaa. Monen maalaistalon varastoista löytyy vieläkin kenkälestejä eli puisia malleja, joiden ympärille kenkä rakennettiin. Suomessa oli vielä 1900-luvun alkupuoliskolla puutetta kengistä. Perheissä, joissa oli useampia lapsia, käytettiin kenkiä vuorotellen. Kenkiä tehtiin myös kankaasta - niitä nimitettiin rättitöppösiksi.
Kun kehitettiin uusia materiaaleja kenkien valmistukseen ja valmistus muuttui teolliseksi, vähenivät suutarien työt dramaattisesti. Heille jää useimmiten vain kenkien korjaajan rooli.
Nykyisin tuntuu vain mielikuvitus olevan rajana kenkien valmistuksessa. Kengät ovat ylellisyystuote, joita jotkut jopa keräilevät. Esimerkiksi Filippiinien entisen presidentin puoliso Imelda Marcos on jäänyt mieliin sadoista kenkäpareistaan.

For centuries now, human beings have protected their feet with shoes. Throughout, fashion has dictated what kinds of shoes have been popular. Shoemakers have been kept busy. Earlier, the material used was mostly leather. In the storage rooms of many farmhouses you can still find shoe trees, wooden models around which the shoe was built. In the beginning of the 20th century, there was still a lack of shoes in Finland. Families with several children recycled shoes amongst each other. Shoes were also made of fabric – those were called rag slippers.
Once new materials and the industry for shoe manufacturing were developed, shoemakers saw a dramatic reduction in their business. Most often they just have the job of fixing shoes.
These days, only the imagination seems to be the limit for shoes. They are a luxury item that some people even collect. For example Imelda Marcos, the wife of the former president of the Philippines, is remembered for her hundreds of pairs of shoes.
Feet are very important for our well-being. If we have pain or other problems in our feet, moving is difficult. Feet are also a very risky part of our bodies. When we are going out and put our shoes on, we rarely think what effect they have on us. In principle, shoes need to be warm in winter and cool in summer. Without forgetting their appearance of course!
The famous health guru David Wolfe has said that shoes are the most dangerous invention of the human kind. What in the world?
But when you think about it, it does seem to be true. In the old days, when people walked barefoot more or wore leather-based shoes, the general state of health was probably better. Now we have many kinds of shoes, medicine has developed with leaps and bounds and still we are sicker than ever. At the background of almost every illness is a state of inflammation in the body and treating it benefits medicine manufacturers the most.
Health shoes sold to us are medicinal products, meaning they are meant to fix the damage already caused in the feet.
What if there was a way to prevent this damage? When children are learning to walk, why do we put shoes on them as soon as possible? Why do we wear shoes indoors? Why does the ideal shoe consist of high heels and a narrow shape?

Now, at last, there are shoes that parallel walking barefoot, the Groundals. For a while now, industries has used ESD-shoes, which remove electric charge from the body. Even regular shoe shops sell these shoes. In addition, there are now sandals, which take the idea of walking barefoot even further, allowing the negatively charged electrons in the ground to move through the shoes into our bodies.

That’s exactly what grounding is about. Our connection to Earth, which is in fact a fabulous source of health.

Jokaisella kivellä on tarinansa, Every stone tells a story

Kivet on sitten ajettu traktorilla peltojen reunaan kiviraunioiksi. Joskus ennen kivikuorma myös purettiin käsin.  Tällä hetkellä on suurin osa kiviraunioista jo haudattu maahan.
Jokaista kiveä on käsitellyt vähintään yksi käsipari.
Siitä tuli ajatus "Every stone tells a story".

The area where I live is abundant with rocks. For a farmer, they are a curse. Year after year, rocks are collected from the fields. Upon plowing, new ones emerge all the time. It feels like there is an endless supply of rocks in the ground, different sizes, different shapes.
Rocks can, however, also be useful. They collect heat and they are a good thing to have, as they also make the ground fluffier.
I myself have spent plenty of time collecting rocks from the fields. After collecting, the rocks have been piled up on the edges of fields, forming rock walls. Sometimes the rocks were also unloaded by hand. At the moment most of the rock walls have already been buried into the ground – obviously they again have a mystical desire to re-emerge!
Rocks are bought in shops. They are used as decorations, in their natural state or colored. Different sizes, different shapes. They are a valuable part of today’s gardens.
Recently we have brought those rocks from the rock walls to our yard. All of a sudden it crossed my mind that several decades ago, I helped to collect some of those rocks that formed the rock walls and now we are bringing them over. Some of them were collected by my grandfather, some by my father, some by the rest of my family and other helpers. Each rock has been handled by a minimum of one pair of hands.
That brought into my mind the thought “Every stone tells a story”. And respect towards both the rocks and past generations does bring tears into my eyes. What a treasure chest the Earth is, how beautiful the stones are and how deep my own roots are in this soil!

Elämää, Life

Herätys on loppuunsuoritettu!
Olen siinä onnellisessa asemassa, etten joudu tuijottaamaan kelloa ja noudattamaan määräaikoja. Voin lähteä kävelylle aamulla. Linnut laulavat, ilmassa on huumaava koivuntuoksu.
Kuikka tekee mestarillisen sukelluksen ties miten kaukaa melkein eteeni.
On aivan tyyni sää, vedenpinta vain kuvastaa vastarannan metsän.
Loppupäivänä on hyvä kylvää siemeniä maahan, onhan kasvavan kuun aika.
Oltuani ulkona, yhteydessä maahan, on kotoisaa mennä nukkumaan jälleen maadoituslakanoiden väliin. Muistaen oman vastuumme.
Life
Spring, such a wonderful new start!
What is it like to live connected to the Earth? Let me tell you about that. I had never thought about it much before, because it has become such a natural part of my everyday life.
I wake up after six am, because I feel hot. I sleep between two grounding sheets, as though I was held on the arms of Mother Earth. Because it is morning, the Earth awakens and wakes me too. I have been sleeping deeply for approximately seven hours, dreaming. This is such a luxury. I remember well how painful it was to lay awake at night, waiting for sleep to come. Accompanied by all sorts of monsters, fears and bleak thoughts.
These days I wake up refreshed and well-rested. Of course I sometimes wake at night, but I fall back asleep quickly instead of staying awake for hours.
My body is again used to a morning swim, so that is part of my plans. The water in the lake is approximately 10 degrees Celsius, and I love to swim in it. Wake up call complete!
I am very lucky because I don’t have to live by the clock or follow any set schedules. I can take a walk in the morning. Birds are singing, the scent of birches in the air is breathtaking. The trees are budding, already beautifully green.
I walk in peace along the side road, without seeing anyone. I walk back barefoot, leaving my footprints on the sand to accompany those of at least a deer and an elk. A car passes me - judging by the expression on the passengers’ faces, me walking holding my shoes has confused them.
When I get back, the soles of my feet are wonderfully dirty, so I rinse them in the lake. The water rushes around my feet.

The lake is busy. In the nearby bed of reeds fishes are holding their spring spawning competition, including some brave jumping out of the water. From who knows how far, a loon dives and emerges almost in front of me.
The weather is completely calm, the surface of the lake reflecting the forest opposite.
During the rest of the day the time is good for sowing some seeds, as it is waxing moon. Time to put down flowers and other plants with crops above ground. Plants with crops underground will be planted during waning moon, after the full moon.
It feels amazing to get my hands into the ground. The soil is warm and fluffy, here and there dotted with earthworms. I can’t do anything if I’m wearing gloves – as will soon be evident by my dirty hands!
In the evening it is time to calm down and listen to the concert of birds. The flute of a blackbird sounds especially beautiful, also during the night.
I have removed all electrical equipment from my bedroom. If you require an alarm clock, use one with batteries. I know it’s better to sleep in a cool room than in a warm room. The grounding sheet is very warm, by the way – really!
I enjoy reading a good book in the evening before going to bed. Staring at the computer screen leaves the brain online and calming enough to sleep is difficult.
After being outside all day, connected to the Earth, it is very homely to again go to sleep between the grounding sheets. I fall asleep quickly and the next time I wake up, it is the morning of a new day with new challenges.
Never underestimate the strength of the Earth and the help you can get from it. As an Earthling I - and you - can live connected to the Earth. Remembering our responsibility.
