Elämän kestämätön helppous, The unbearable easiness of life

Miten helppoa onkaan nykyaikana elämämme verrattuna entisaikoihin. Suonette anteeksi, että taas kerran palaan ”vanhoihin, hyviin aikoihin” – kultaako aika muistikuvat, kenties?

Aloitetaan ravinnosta.

No, vähänkö meitä on peloteltu punkeilla, karhuilla ja muilla pedoilla.

It's hard to believe how easy life is today compared to what it used to be. Please forgive me for once again going back to the "good old times" - perhaps the passing of time makes memories golden?

Let's start with food. In the old days food had to be prepared. Many people grew both vegetables and meat products. Shops did not offer ready meals like they do today. These days you can already buy things such as pancakes, peeled (and cooked) potatoes, not to even mention other meals. Everything is ready-made, all you have to do is heat it up and eat. On the other hand we are all master chefts - at least in the television.

Of course, there is flip side to the coin. How far does our food come from, how many pairs of hands or machines have been used to make it? What has been added to preserve the item both of the shop's shelf and at home? That's right, what has been added is not nutrition, but additives, which are a constant topic for arguments, as are fats and sugars. The consumption of sugar has skyrocketed together with additives and unhealthy, man-made fats. That is quite a health bomb.

People have been sick before, but the illnesses were different. Lives were shorter, but healthier. In the beginning of the 1990's, there wasn't much talk of Alzheimer's or dementia. Today, everyone knows those conditions. Not to even mention type II diabetes, insomnia or the increasing number of diseases caused by inflammation. The list is long and more often than not, the tracks lead back to what we eat. In addition to being slaves to machines: you are using some sort of a device to read this text right now.

In the old days, we used to spend more time outside, moving around in the nature. Nowadays, a new phobia has been diagnosed: a phobia of nature. People have been scared to death by talk of bears and ticks and other monsters. It's probably safer to go shopping.

And that brings us right onto the topic of money. Money makes the world go round. You don't have to be very paranoid to start thinking why we have become (or have been made) so helpless. There is health and beauty, eternal happiness, if you'll only buy this and that, eat this and go here. As good consumers we do as we are told. And someone gets the money. The question remains, why is there always depression, why is money always being saved? Where does all the saved money go, where is that giant piggy bank?
