No, onkos tullut kesä... Is it summer again?

Jaksammeko me?

Me suomalaiset elämme todella rankoissa olosuhteissa verrattuna moniin muihin. Australialainen tuttavani ihmettelikin, olemmeko jotain superkansaa. Kyllähän me olemme – sopeutumisen mestareita.

It's dark outside in the morning and evening. In between there are a few hours of light. We are living the darkest time of the year but also for many, the busiest and most stressful. Christmas and New Year are approaching fast, another year is about to become history. We work a lot, cash machines are supposed to be tinkling and people are supposed to be strong. Are we strong? It feels all wrong that in the summer, when we have almost four times as much light, we take it easy. Holidays are great and necessary of course, but this darkness demands a lot more than many of us are able to handle.
We are, after all, a part of nature, even though it feels like such a silly thought. How does nature react to less light? It takes things easy. Some just hibernate.
Before the current hectic 24/7 lifestyle, people also calmed down with the arrival of winter. During summer they had worked in the light, done harvest in the fall and then they moved indoors. Life was adapted to the amount of light.

Sunlight is what determines the rhythm of our lives here on Earth. Despite the fact that we are surrounded by artificial light, our bodies try to follow their own circadian rhythms, but we often don't give them the chance. Sunlight is a powerful wake-up call and energizer. This time of the year, everyone should spend at least half an hour outdoors every day, so the timer of our bodies can keep up. The light of the day also affects our nighttime sleep, which so many seem to have lost.
For the sake of evergy saving, LED lights have been developed. They do save energy, but the color of the light is too strong at least in the evening. Evening light is supposed to be the reddish color of sunset, not the blue of computers, tablets or smartphones. The color of the light tells our bodies when to go to sleep.

In the spring and summer we automatically move to the correct rhythm with natural light. The turning of the clocks between summer and winter time that has been going on for decades in an entirely different issue, the worst invention ever which causes many problems for a lot of people.
Why does the coat of a forest rabbit turn white in the fall and back to brown in the spring? What guides this transformation? It's not the weather getting colder, it's the reducing light. Changes are also apparent in us. We Finns live in extremely harsh circumstances compared to many. My Australian friend wondered if we are some sort of super people and we are – masters of adaptation. The four seasons are a marvellous thing, but unfortunately we live like it's eternal summer.

Minne on uni kadonnut? Where has the sleep gone?

Kuormitamme aivojamme, emme kehoamme. Tai sitten kuormitamme yli molempia. Kortisolitasot jylläävät korkealla myös yöaikaan.
Tämän ”saarnan” päätteeksi on pakko esittää omia vinkkejäni.
Älä harrasta rankkaa liikuntaa illalla, korkeintaan rento iltakävely on paikallaan.

The number one topic these days again seems to be insomnia. Both newspapers and other media sources deal with this issue almost daily. Why don’t we sleep? Have we always slept badly? I doubt that.

We need sleep both physically and mentally. Our brains require rest, our bodies require rest. For many, days are hectic. Work may not be physical, but mentally very burdening. Brains struggle, body struggles for not getting the exercise it needs.

There is a lot of talk about how to sleep better. Tips are offered all around - of course we are individuals in this respect as well. The last straw is sleeping pills but before that, most have already tried several things.

How did people sleep before? Finland has always had the same four seasons, naturally with changes in weather conditions. We sleep worse in the winter than in the summer, which is quite strange. This hasn’t always been the case. When life was more structured by natural light, people went to bed early in the winter. There were no televisions, not to even mention other modern communication gadgets. Sleeping was something taken for granted – not a problem.

People woke up in the morning, in their own rhythm. Of course there have always been those more sensitive people who didn’t sleep as well. The full moon kept people awake during winter. Working days were long when it was summer and there was a lot of light.

Today, we are slaves to the clock. Business world demanded the moving of the clocks for summer. When that madness started, we didn’t yet have Internet enabling communications whenever. The rhythm of the nature hasn’t changed.

There are many reasons for bad sleep. Most of them can be found from what we do during the day – we live wrong. We burden our brains, not our bodies. Or we over-burden both. Cortisol levels are too high during the night.

At the end of this “sermon”, I have to offer a few tips of my own. I used to sleep badly for a long time but have managed to fix it, in the end with quite small changes.
- If possible, spend time outside in the natural light for at least 20-30 minutes every day.
- Don’t exercise late in the evening. A relaxed evening walk at most.
- Eat an evening snack, not a heavy meal, but enough to feel comfortably full when you go to bed.
- Stop using the computer/iPad/smartphone at least two hours before going to bed. Read a book instead.
- If possible, remove all electronic gadgets from the bedroom.
- Keep the bedroom cool, under 20 degrees Celsius.
- If possible, go to bed at the same time every day.
- And my extra tip: get an Earthing sheet.

Matkakuumetta ?

Esimerkiksi:

Travel fever ?

Are you bored of dark and rainy Finland and planning a holiday? If you have a longer flight, try grounding yourself both on the plane and at your destination to reduce or even avoid jetlag. Here are some tips, tested by Linda in Australia.

Use Earthing to help with jet lag

Don’t waste one second of your valuable holiday time by being tired! With the help of Earthing you can reduce jet lag and tiredness – here are a few tips on what to do both in the plane and once you arrive, so you can enjoy your holiday from the very beginning!
It’s not possible to ground yourself on the plane in the same way as by walking barefoot or using Earthing products, because the plane doesn’t have earth for us to connect to. However, you can use the metallic chassis of the plane as a “sink” to discharge all the static electricity that builds up in your body and can create jet lag, in a similar way as you would ground yourself in a car.

On short flights – less than four hours
The easiest way to ground yourself on the plane is to remove your shoes and place your bare feet on the metallic seat legs or bolts in front of you. On newer planes, the seat legs are often covered with plastic, leaving only the bolts bare. This is okay, just make sure your bare skin is touching the bolt.

On longer flights – more than four hours
On trips that cross several timezones and are more likely to cause jet lag, you will probably want to sleep at some point and also move around more. By bringing an Earthing product with you, you can easily stay grounded for the whole trip. For example:
- Earthing Auto Seat Pad with alligator clip: in similar way as when traveling by car, the vibrations of the plane will create a layer of sweat on your body. This will transfer through your clothes onto the Pad connected to the metal chassis, discharging the static electricity from your body. Connect the Pad with an alligator clip to the metallic seat leg or any piece of metal under the seat. You can sit on the Pad and it won’t disturb your trip in any way, you can sleep, take a walk and come back onto the Pad, keep your hands on it while watching movies or place your feet on it. For best results, make sure to get bare skin contact.
- Earthing body bands: by attaching an Earthing band to your wrist of ankle you can still keep your shoes or socks on and still be grounded. Connect the band to the metal chassis with an alligator clip like with the Pad. When taking a walk or going to the restroom, remember to take the band off or disconnect the cord.
Tip: sometimes it can be difficult to connect the alligator clip to the metal due to lack of space or the metal part being too thick. The easiest way here is to connect the clip to an Earthing patch and then connect the patch onto the metal. Just remember to pull off the patch before leaving the plane.

At your destination:
Upon arrival, the best way to avoid jet lag is to walk, stand or sit on the ground with your feet bare for approximately 30 minutes. This can however be difficult in some places due to too hot or too cold weather. In this case, use Earthing products at your hotel, such as the Pad or a body band by connecting it via a plug suitable to your destination and resting, reading or watching TV for approximately 30 minutes. Try to get used to the new timezone by not sleeping until the evening and use a half sheet, pillow case, plush pad or a recovery bag in order to stay grounded for the night and every night during your holiday. Earthing helps with jet lag because you can co-ordinate with the natural circadian rhythms of your new environment faster. Remember to repeat the process on the way back!
By reducing or even eliminating jet lag you can enjoy your holidays a lot more and have more energy to do and experience everything you want. Happy Holidays!

Niiden takana on pieniä päivittäisiä syntejä luontoa vastaan. Kun riittävästi syntejä on kertynyt, sairauksia puhkeaa yhtäkkiä.”
Mitähän Hippokrates sanoisi  nykyisestä elämänmenosta?

In the spring
...life begins, but so many also leave this life. Death touches us, near and far. It stops us to think about our own lives, when we get older. Is that followed by anxiety or joy? It can be either. What do I hold on to, pondering questions of life and death? What do I fear the most – death, or perhaps life after all?

The worst scenario of course is when at death’s door you notice how much you’ve lived on other people’s terms, fulfilling their wishes. Playing it safe, not daring to take radical action yourself. What is the power that makes you listen to everyone else’s reactions? The seek for approval – some will never approve, no matter how you twist yourself. There’s always someone who disagrees.
And yet the most important person of your life is you. If you don’t love yourself, accept yourself and fulfill your wishes, who do you think will do it for you? It’s unreasonable to demand anyone else to make you happy. If you don’t feel happy, another person has no means to make you happy.
Our body is the temple we spend this life in. And it is our responsibility to take care of that body with acceptance and love. How many of us are only looking for the faults, too much weight, too many wrinkles? We modify and punish our bodies, even if it feels bad. Yet the body’s basic needs are enough rest, reasonable amount of exercise and good quality nutrition. Sitting has been branded a punishable action, not to even mention the eating recommendations which are far from natural. Our way of life and our environment are changing fast and our physiology can’t keep up. Many problems and inconveniences follow.
I firmly believe that everything is based on nature. And everything taking us further away from nature is a bad thing. A long time ago, about 2500 years, the Father of Medicine Hippocrates stated: “Illnesses do not come upon us out of the blue. They are developed from small daily sins against Nature. When enough sins have accumulated, illnesses will suddenly appear.”
I wonder what Hippocrates would say about the way we live today?
